A post-mortem of Moltbook: When "Vision" meets Reality.
In January 2026, a social network for AI agents called Moltbook launched. Its creator proudly tweeted: "I didn't write one line of code... AI made it a reality."
Within 72 hours, the site collapsed. It wasn't due to the "Singularity." It was due to three fundamental engineering failures that AI—without human oversight—cannot currently fix.
When you ask an LLM to "build a backend API," it optimizes for functionality, not security. It gives you code that works when everyone plays nice.
The Flaw: Broken Object Level Authorization (BOLA). The server trusted the User ID sent in the request without checking if the logged-in user actually owned that ID.
Try it below. You are logged in as User 101. Try to edit your post, then try to overwrite the Admin's post (ID 100).
Modern databases (like Supabase or Firebase) are powerful, but dangerous if not configured. In Moltbook, querying a user profile didn't just return their name; it returned the entire database row.
This is a failure of Serialization. The backend should filter data before sending it to the frontend.
The final nail in the coffin was the lack of Rate Limiting. Without it, a single script can spam thousands of requests per second, exhausting server memory (RAM) and crashing the database.

The failure of Moltbook wasn't that AI wrote the code. It's that the "architect" assumed that code which runs is code that is production-ready.
Engineering is the invisible work of validation, sanitization, and limitation. Until AI can reason about systems rather than just syntax, human oversight remains mandatory.
